Ruthless winter breeze is making us shiver and the feet are facing challenging time to warm up. Being human, you can at least arrange for a bonfire or prepare hot and spicy food to keep you warm. Think about the plants once! They cannot speak and thus you have to touch them, look at their stems, soil, flowers, and leaves closely and make them feel comfortable in this cold winter season. Grow Vegetables:
Winter is a great time to grow a variety of vegetables and enjoy them fresh on your dining table. Bring the seeds or plants of cauliflower, cabbage, tomatoes, carrot, beans, radish, bell peppers, lettuce, spinach, etc. in your garden. You would surely enjoy your time in the garden. The colorful spread would make your garden look vibrant and it is a great feeling when you see the yields of your hard work in your garden.
Compost Bin:
You can go to a local garden center or nursery and ask them for some used wooden pallets so that you can build your new compost bin. Many of these centers or nursery’s want to get rid of their extra pallets and thus you won’t have any problem to arrange that. Use these wooden pallets to make one or two three-sided bin and fasten them together. You can use straws, tea leaves, kitchen scraps, dry leaves, etc. to make your compost. This compost would give rich nutrients to the soil and thus this is one of the most important tips for winter gardening.
Mind The Water:
One of the most essential tips for winter gardening is to keep a check at the water supply. Water your garden only once a week and go for deep-watering. Because most the soil is soggy and the wind is very cold and thus it may affect the plant roots. While watering once a week, make sure, you water the leaves, roots, and above-ground shoots – every part of the plant very well.
Maintenance of Houseplants:
Houseplants need special winter care to feel comfortable. Dust is not good for houseplants and thus wash the leaves when they are looking dirty. Winter means shorter days and longer nights. So, it means dear Sun comes out for a brief time and you have to utilize that time. So, when the sun is out in full glory from 8:30 or 9:00 A.M., let your houseplants soak some sunlight. If your houseplants are kept near the glass pane, then remove it and place it somewhere else because glass chills faster and remain cold for longer and that’s not suitable for plants. If you cannot move them elsewhere, then put cardboard or newspaper cover on your window panes.
No Fertilizer:
During winter time, let your garden rest for a while and thus don’t go for fertilizers at all. Forcing the plants to start a new growth before the soil warms up in spring would disturb the sleeping period for some plants. Inversely, the cold climate, snow (in places) would kill the tender new growth.
Mulching Is Important
Mulch is actually a layer of material applied to the topsoil to improve soil health and fertility, improving conservation of soil moisture, reduction of weed growth, etc. Now, mulch can be organic or inorganic in nature. The permanent or inorganic mulch are plastic sheets. But opting for an organic or real mulch is a better choice which can be bark chips or manure of compost unified naturally into the soil with help of some worms or other organisms would improve the productivity of the soil. In this way, the perennials would be protected in your garden.
