World Environment Day: Why Should You Care About the Environment?

world environment day

World Environment Day – this is not a one-day phenomenon but this is a practice that we all must follow all around the year. Why? Because since the emergence of life on this planet, the environment has been nurturing us with every basic necessity. We have squeezed the nature too much and now our environment is ailing and we must take care of it. We all must take this necessary step this World Environment Day to plant more trees and plants so that we can leave a better world for our future generations.

Some Exemplary Social Initiatives:

Last year, the Kerala government took a stupendous initiative by planting 1 crore saplings all over Kerala for a better and greener future.

Mr. Afroze Shah took the initiative of cleaning up the Versova beach and transformed it from a shabby state to a smarter one.

The theme for the World Environment Day 2018, is “Beat Plastic Pollution” because plastic has been proved fatal to our marine environment and also to human life. So, this year, Red FM has come up with a mind-blowing project called “Rail Laga Denge”. In this initiative, they are covering the stations in New Delhi and taking away plastic water bottle from the commuters and offering them eco-friendly bottles made out of the mud. They are also requesting people to dump the plastic bottles into dustbin wherever they are noticed.

Why Do We Need to Bring a Change?

The latest example that shook the world is Pilot whale that was noticed in a canal in the southern province of Songkhla, Thailand. It was taken to the nearby veterinary doctors and they tried to save this marine life but the plastic pollution led by the human population took its life. Upon autopsy, 80 plastic bags and other plastic items weighing up to 8kgs were found in its body. When would we understand that we are not the only living beings on this planet? Just because we can talk and emote we are placed above all living creatures. But our intellect is of no use when we cannot save other creatures.

You may be startled to learn that in Los Angeles alone, 10 metric tons of plastic fragments like grocery bags, straws, and soda bottles are conceded into the Pacific Ocean every day. It takes It takes 500-1,000 years for plastic to destroy!

The plastic that we dump into the oceans kills at least 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals annually.

The quality of water on this planet is deteriorating because plastic releases toxic Styrene Trimer. Plastic is a light material and thus it is carried away very easily by the wind resulting in the land litter.

The aforementioned challenging situations are reasons enough to adopt a sustainable approach and stop the usage of plastic.

Apart from all adopting these effective measures, we cannot forget the role of green plants in transforming the environment. Plants form the most important part of our cycle and thus we should bring more and more green friends in our lives. As a responsible citizen, discard plastic from your life (the methods of which were discussed in our previous blog: https://blog.fnp.com/easy-ways-to-say-no-to-plastic/ and also bring these green plants to your home.
