Eid is celebrated with much fanfare all across the world. It is a great day dedicated to praying and feasting together. Friends and distant relatives greet each other and then gorge on the wonderful dishes prepared with much love all through the day. As Eid is celebrated by Muslim people all over the world there are many special foods witnessed on this day. The Eid Dishes of India would be 360 degrees different from that of Somalia.

Biryani:

Yes, we Indians don’t actually require a special day to enjoy this rich and flavorful Mughlai food. But this is a very special food among Muslims of the Indian Subcontinent which is the main course on the day of Eid. As per specification, mutton, chicken, beef, or egg is used in this blissful Eid dish. A good quality rice grain along with mutton/chicken/beef, curd, nutmeg, mace, clarified butter, onion, tomato, garlic, ginger, green chili, coriander leaves, cardamom, cinnamon, bay leaf, peppercorns, saffron, milk, and salt are used to cook this rice recipe.

Tajine:

This dish named Tajine is famous in the North African countries like Morocco and Algeria. This Eid dish requires an overnight preparation and at least 2 hours to cook. The meat is marinated in the mixture of cayenne, black pepper, paprika, ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon overnight. The next day, in a large frying pan firstly onions are fried and then the marinated meat is added along with tomatoes, apricots, dates, raisins or sultanas, flaked almonds, saffron, lamb stock, and honey. This preparation is now slow-cooked for 2 hours.

Doro Wat:

Doro Wat is a famous dish from Ethiopia. The Ethiopian spices and special Ethiopian butter is used in this chicken dish that is traditionally eaten with a sourdough bread. The chicken pieces are marinated in simple lemon juice. Red onions are caramelized in a large vessel and then the special Ethiopian spices and butter are added followed by marinated chicken. It is slow-cooked for 45 minutes and then hard-boiled eggs are added and then further cooked for 10 minutes.

Maamoul:

This is an ancient Arabian dish and it is served with love during Eid. This sweet dish is most famous in Syria and Lebanon. The appearance resembles a dry gujiya but the shape varies. It is a shortbread cookie filled with walnuts, pistachios, almonds, and figs. The structure is either flat or domed. Generally, the families prepare this Eid dish few days prior to Eid and store it. It is served with chocolates and coffee.

Cambaabur:

This is a famous Eid food from Somali and it looks like our plain Dosa. It is prepared in the Dosa way. All-purpose flour, wheat flour, millet flour, yeast, sugar, salt, onion, garlic, turmeric powder, fennel seeds, nigella seeds, and water are required. All these ingredients are blended well and then kept for 4-6 hours for the mixture to double. Now, in a frying pan with a little oil, the desired scoops are placed and fried until golden brown. Caster sugar is sprinkled while frying and it is served with curd.

Beef Rendang:

Beef Rendang is the main Eid dish of Malaysia. It originated among the Minangkabau ethnic group of Indonesia. Onion, chili, garlic, ginger, and lemongrass are made into a thick paste. Coriander, fennel, cumin, and nutmeg are ground. In a thick vessel oil is added and firstly the paste is placed followed by the dry mixture and the beef. Then coconut milk, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, sugar, and water is added and slow-cooked for 1 hour.

Sheer Khurma:

The word Sheer Khurma means Milk with Dates. Without this sweet dish, Eid celebration seems to be incomplete. This Sheer Khurma is really famous in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. It is very simple to make. Milk, sugar, dates, pistachios, almonds, raisins, and vermicelli are required to prepare this sweet and relishing dish. The dates are soaked in milk for some time to soften a bit. Vermicelli is dry roasted first and the dry fruits are roasted in clarified butter. Milk is boiled and one by one all these items are added. It is served chilled.

Lokum:

Lokum

These colorful and delightful sweets are known was Turkish delight. It is a specialty of Turkey and is a gel-like sweet item made from sugar, starch, pistachios, walnuts, and dates. It is a wonderful item to be gifted to kids and adults during this Holy month.

Tufahija:

Tufahija is another dessert item for Eid which is a specialty of Bosnia. It is a poached stuffed apple that is served in a fancy way with syrups and whipped cream. The apples are boiled nicely and then drenched in sugar and stuffed with walnut. After the heavy Eid meal, this sweet treat is a must-have!

Bolani:

Bolani

This Eid dish is a popular one in Afghanistan. Not only Eid-al-Fitr, but this food is eaten during all other festivals also.  It is a thin-crusted bread that is stuffed with vegetables like potato or pumpkin or lentils. It is best served with yogurt. So, it is closer to our stuffed parathas that we love to gorge with curd!
